Andrew Trail first appears in Dutch service between 1573-1574 and was commissioned on 26 October 1577 to raise a company of Scots by the Privy Council of Scotland. He was financed in 1579 by Alexander Segaitt, a prominent Scottish merchant in Veere. In 1580 he was promoted to colonel, along with Edward Preston, under whom the Scottish companies were divided into two regiments. By 11 October 1581 he was stationed in Menin and wrote to the Prince of Orange about the preparations of the Spanish at Tournai. It is possible he died in Menin in 1583.
