CROMWELL, JOHN [SSNE 8409]

John Cromwell was an officer in the Anglo-Dutch Brigade. During his tenure in Dutch service he held the following ranks in the third regiment of the Brigade:
Captain: 1622
Sergeant-Major: 3 February 1633
Lieutenant-Colonel: 16 April 1639
Colonel: 24 December 1642
He was replaced by Thomas Dolman [SSNE 8411] on 18 September 1663.
Cromwell was a cousin of Oliver Cromwell but evidently was Royalist in persuasion, returning to England briefly in the 1640s to intercede for the life of King Charles.
