Text source

Captain Smith was a Scottish captain in the 1570s in Dutch service. He had entered Dutch service sometime before Haarlem, and in Verdugo’s Commentario, the author mentioned that a Captain Hamilton in Verdugo’s regiment had given assurances to Smith in Haarlem. In Verdugo’s memoir Smith is noted as a colonel, but Smith is mentioned as a captain in a resolution of Holland dated to 25 Sept. 1575. Smith also served at Alkmaar, alongside Captain Cornellys.
