BELLERDY, JAN [SSNE 8378]
Text source
John Bellerdy was an English privateer ('Sea-Beggar' or 'Wategeuzen') in the service of the Prince of Orange, in 1571. He had served under William Laboen [SSNE 8373] for several years and when Laboen went to join the Sea-Beggars Bellerdy joined him too (perhaps, as de Meij states, impressed into service). He served as a gunner under the command of Jan Claesz Spiegel until he was captured by the Spanish and taken to The Hague where he was tortured and subsequently executed in December 1571.
