Adam Jacobsson Leijel was the son of James Leijel [SSNE 4934] of Arbroath in Scotland. He was born in Stockholm in December 1658. He is probably the same Adam Leyel who became a burgess of Stockholm on 29 October 1670. By 1672 he matriculated at Uppsala University (07/12/1672) and later he became the factory owner of Hammarby Ironworks. He was eventually naturalised as a Swede on 28/05/1717 and introduced into the Riddarhus in 1719 under the number 1533. In an act of charity Adam endowed a poorhouse at Hammarby near Nora, and gave an endowment to the University of Uppsala. He died unmarried and childless in 1729. In his life he is accredited with various methods of ironworking. These methods were transfered to the Hallefors Silverworks of which his cousin, Adam Henriksson Leijell [SSNE 3772], became director in 1718. It was for this invention that he was ennobled. Adam established a stipend at Uppsala Academy. He had three important uncles in Sweden, David [SSNE 824], Adam [SSNE 6493] and Henrik [SSNE 3614]
