Captain John Livingston was an officer in the Earl of Buccleuch's [SSNE 5009] regiment of the Scots-Dutch Brigade. His father was Sir Henry Livingston who, by 1628, had died and was replaced by Patrick Murray. John Livingston's mother petitioned the States-General that year for her three sons to receive commissions in the army. On 24 November, the States-General agreed that John Livingston should receive an appointment in his father's old company. On 14 January 1630, he succeeded command of Captain John Semple's company. Livingston was wounded on 31 July 1632 at the siege of Maastricht. He was promoted sergeant-major sometime after. By 4 December 1640 he was lieutenant-colonel of Sir Philip Balfour's regiment. He was dead by 11 May 1649 and command of his companies fell to Sir Walter Scott [SSNE 4997] and Sir William Fleming.
