Ferdinand Knightly was an officer in the Anglo-Dutch Brigade. He was a captain as early as 1622, serving in Colonel Sidney's regiment. During his tenure in the Dutch Republic he then held the following ranks:
Sergeant-major: 16 December 1632-19 May 1638
Lieutenant-Colonel: 19 May 1638-1 November 1644
Colonel: 1 November 1644-8 December 1646
