THOMAS?, THOMAS? [SSNE 8068]
Text source
Thomas ?, was an Englishman in Rotterdam, who is otherwise unfortunately and entirely anonymous. He was the subject of a very colorful account from Isbrand Verhagen, 33, a wine merchant, and Jan Thomaszoon, 36, a worker, in 1655. Evidently Verhagen and Thomaszoon were helping to load wine onto the ship Sara of Leith, when Thomas walked onto the ship, drunk, and began to argue with the workers, interfering with the stowing of the wine. The skipper, Scotsman James Robertson, asked "politely and kindly" not to make any problems and to leave his ship. However, Thomas did not listen and began arguing with, and pushing, Robertson and Thomaszoon. Thomas then retreated briefly, and subsequently cursed the crew for being "Scottish dogs." He then took off his jacket and raised his fists, attacking Thomaszoon. The two were eventually separated by one Reijnier Groenhout.
