Lieutenant-Colonel James Caddel was an officer in the Scots-Dutch Brigade. He was commissioned as captain on 15 August 1596 and served at Nieuwpoort. In 1595 he had been recommended to the authorities in Holland by the Prince to be commissioned as captain Caddel, along with Colonel Edmond [SSNE 8019], Sergeant-Major Brog [SSNE 7842], and Captains Henderson and Kerr, were some of the survivors left from the estimated 600 Scots killed at the actions in and around Nieuwpoort. The strength and salary of his company varied over his tenure as captain:

1599: 113 men, £1502

1601: Same

1604: 41 men, 113 full strength ? (Ferguson, 66)

1607: 150 men, £1925

1608: 89 men, £1271

1609: 70 men, £1059

In 1604 Caddel and his company were presumably serving in Utrecht, as Caddel appears to have been owed £996, 11 shillings by the lords there for his company's pay.

It is probable that Caddel was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1606, after the death of Edmond and promotion of Brog. It is also possible that the position had been vacant from some time, due to the petition of Captain Henry Balfour for its appointment c. 1611 (Ferguson, 250). However, in 1610, the Duchies of Juliers and Cleves were contested by Leopold of Austria on one side and the Electors Brandenburg and Palatine on the other. An auxillary force of two English regiments and one Scottish regiment, commanded by Sir Edward Cecil, Lord Wimbeldon were sent to aid the protestant contestants for the area. In this expedition, Caddel served as lieutenant-colonel to Sir Robert Henderson [SSNE 4975] with Sir William Balfour acting as sergeant-major of the nine companies in the Scots regiment.

Caddel returned to Brog's regiment after the expedition, but by 1618 he was dead. He was succeeded by Allan Coutts [SSNE 8003].
