James Cowden was a Scot serving with the VOC in 1607 and was headed to the East Indies under Captain Jacob den Boudt. He had borrowed 30 guilders to buy equipment for his trip from one Jochom Willemsz Druyff and thus named Druyff and his wife, Neeltgen Michielsdr, his heirs to that amount. The rest he left to Druyff's children and to his own father, Peter Cowden, who was still living in Edinburgh.
