Text source
John Watt of Borrowstones was a sailor under Captain Aert Jansz Jongeboerejaep in 1653, during the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-1654). In his will, dated to 12 April 1653, he left his possessions to his wife Janneken Bruyn, who resided on the Schiedam. Bruyn was noted as the widow of Robert Clercq, possibly another Scot who had lived in Rotterdam.
N.B. Watt's captain, Aert Jansz Jongeboer, had been very active throughout the early days of the Dutch War. He and his vessel, the Gelderlandt, is mentioned in a list of ships in Commodore de Ruyter's squadron from late 1653. See AND C.T. Atkinson (ed.), Letters and Papers Relating to the First Dutch War 1652-1654, Vol. VI (NRS, Vol. 66, 1930), p. 157 and the index on p. 302 for further documents on Jongeboer's service.
