John Bower was an Englishman who owned a ship, a ‘galliot hoy’ registered in Bridlington, Yorkshire. Bower’s ship had been pressed into service by the late Mayor of Newcastle, Henry Madison and was ratified by Sir William Coventry on 23 September 1666. Bower’s ship left Newcastle for Gothenburg sometime in 1666. Sir William Blackett [SSNE 7759] wrote to the Navy Commissioners in January 1667 to determine the status of the payment of Bower’s contract. The contract, along with work on several of the Navy frigates in Newcastle’s dockyard was valued by Blackett to be at 342 pounds, 2 shillings and 6 pence.
