James Stewart of Ardgowan was a captain in King James V's service. In 1519 he was sent with auxiliary foot, ships, supplies and money to Copenhagen, in response to a request from king Christian II of the Kalmar Union (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) who sought help in his fight against rebellious factions of his Swedish kingdom.Denys Hay, ed.
