BURTON, JOHN [SSNE 7129]
Text source
John Burton was the son of an Edinburgh merchant of the same name. On one journey home from Bremen in 1679, the ship he was on (John Waddell skipper) called into a Danish port where the skipper was caught for concealing wines from the customs. This offended the Danes who imprisoned the merchant's son, John Burton . The Scottish Privy Council interceded to have Burton released, he being ignorant of the skippers actions and just past puberty. It is not clear if Waddell himself was actually captured as the Council note that he violently recatured his goods.Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, 3rd series, VI, 1678-1680, p.305
