John Waddell was a Scottish skipper. On one journey home from Bremen in 1679, he called into a Danish port where he was caught for concealing wines from the customs. This offended the Danes who imprisoned the merchant's son, John Burton of Edinburgh. The Scottish Privy Council interceded to have Burton released, though it is not clear if Waddell himself was actually captured as the Council note that he violently recatured his goods
