In 1668 lieutenant John Seaton petitioned the Scottish Privy Council for a birthbrieve. He had obtained a certificate from the Earl of Wintoun, Viscount of Kingston and others testifying to his origins, and the Council agreed to his request. Seaton was a lieutenant in the Scots Royal French Guard, having served for "diverse years past".
