ENGELSMAN, NILS [SSNE 6645]
Text source
Nils Engelsman was possibly an Englishman, given his surname, and he appears to have been in Swedish service. He was a skipper from 1602-1609 and during that time he led cargo ships from Gavle to Stockholm in 1606. From June to August he was a yard captain at Stockholm shipyard in 1609, a role he reprised from November 1610 until July 1611. He then commanded a small fleet in the Smaland archipelago for the Swedish navy during the Kalmar war. The fleet comprised 10 vessels, and Engelsman captured the Danish Stjern. Although a subsequent misunderstanding regarding the delivery of provisions to Rissby led to Engelsman and another officer, Cordel, being sentenced to death, they were both pardoned. In December he was appointed to take 6 ships to Amsterdam, but this was cancelled. From 1613-1617 he served as the captain at Harbovik wharf, and from 1619-1626 he continued to serve as a captain in the Swedish navy. It appears that the highest rank he attained was "overcaptain"Generalstaben, Sveriges Krig, bilagsband I; A. Zettersten, Svenska Flottans Historia aren 1522-1634, (Stockholm, 1890), pp.254-255; R.C. Anderson, Naval Wars in the Baltic 1522-1850 (London, 1969),31-32.
