Text source
Captain James Hamilton was a Scot who served the 'Duke of Newburgh' in Germany, as a result of which he had been "raised to good esteem, credit and employment". He claimed descent from several honourable families in Scotland and his supplication to the Privy Council of Scotland for a birthbrieve in 1683 was upheld. He was supported in this application by the Duke of Hamilton, the Marquis of Montrose and many other Scottish noblemen and gentlemen of good pedigree. .
