AITKENHEAD, JOHN [SSNE 6502]

John Aitkenhead was a Scottish citizen and merchant of Tarnow, east of Cracow. He was engaged in the wine trade in Hungary along the Vistula and with Russian traders. Aitkenhead also had connections with other Scotsmen who held positions at the royal court. John also served as a commercial plenipotentiary on behalf of fellow Scot, Arthur Forbes. He was appointed servant of Jan Sobieski, the most important military officer, in 1663. In 1677 he married Elizabeth Davidson [SSNE 6501] in her hometown of Zamosc.
