Robert Forbes was born in Rotterdam in the Dutch Republic on 23 September 1645, the son of Alexander 10/11th Lord Forbes and his wife Elizabeth Forbes of Rires. His father left him the barony of Tollies (Towie) in Aberdeenshire in his will in 1672. He must have returned to Scotland to claim this and he died in Castle Forbes in Scotland on 6 May 1678. It is probable that from 1649-1672 he lived in Sweden with his father and mother.
