Captain Johan Otto von Stuart was born in Mecklenburg. He enlisted with the Stralsund Infantry on 14 April 1702 and became an NCO with the regiment in 1704. Von Stuart was commissioned as an ensign in Breitholts Infantry in 1706. His promotion continued and he made lieutenant before being captured at Tönningen in 1713. He was released the next year but was captured again in 1715, this time with the rank of captain. Von Stuart remained a prisoner until 1718 and on his release he was put into the Skånska Tremän Cavalry. He left service on 30 September 1719.
