Major James Guthrie was the son of the Scottish merchant, William Guthrie, burgess of Stockholm and his wife Margareta Dargeman. He was born in 1685. Gutherie's first service was with Wellingks Regiment in around 1700. He then transferred to the service of Holstein in 1702 and became a captain in the Wismar Garrison regiment in 1712. He eventually became a major there and was killed on duty in 1719 near Elvsborg.
