Thomas Bennet was the grandson of the Scottish officer James Bennet and Christina Kinnemond (daughter of the Scottish colonel, Thomas Kinnemond). He apparently served in the British navy, and certainly joined the Swedish navy as a volunteer in 1689. His rank was that of an NCO until March 1700 when he became an ensign. On 11 July 1702 (one source notes 1704) he was blown up with his ship in the Peipus Sea to escape Russian capture. In 1694 he had married Catharina Ahlfelt.
