Colonel Gustavus Hamilton was the son of Ludovick Hamilton [SSNE 2603], Baron of Dalserf and Baron and Lord of Nabben and his wife, Anna Catherina Grubbe-Stjernfelt (1631-1689). His father received his final dismissal permit from Swedish service in 1662 along with a travel pass to the British Isles though he was either killed on his homeward journey or died before leaving Gothenburg. His mother made it to Ireland where she was styled Anna Catherine, Lady Hamilton of Tullykeltyre, Co. Fermanagh where she went on to marry Capt. James Somervill of Tallacht. She was later forfeited by King James in 1689, the year in which she died. Gustavus had two wives, the first of whom was called Lettice Gore and died in the first year of marriage in 1676. Gustavus Hamilton styled himself "of Castleton" and later "of Monea" after his return to Ireland. In 1686 as his son Ludovic was born in Enniskillen that year. Gustavus was also forfeited in 1689 and in response raised six regiments for King William, two of which were Enniskilliners. His brother Malcolm served as Major in his regiment. Gustavus also served as Governor of the city, but died by December of 1691. His second wife, Margaret Cooper received a pension from the Irish Parliament of £600 on 3 November 1703. By Margaret Cooper he had the sons Edward and Ludovic and a daughter who married Cornet James Cathcart.
