John Stercovius, a German resident in Poland, visited Scotland in the early 1600s. Apparently his Polish atire caused hilarity in the streets of Scotland, and when he returned to Poland he published a tract which was derisory about Scotland. King James VI saw to it that Patrick Gordon, Scottish factor at Danzig, and a certain David Gray prosecuted Stercovius, resulting in his conviction, sentencing and beheading at Rastenburg in 1611. On 15th February 1612 King James VI and I ordered that all copies of the tract should be confiscated.
