Text source

William Lithgow, from Clydesdale in Scotland, visited Poland in 1616, and provided an account of the Scots resident in that country. He noted that in Cracow, Warsaw and Lublin he met many of his compatriots, many of them merchants, and described Poland as "a Mother and Nurse, for the youth and younglings of Scotland, who are yearely sent hither in great numbers". Lithgow noted "thirty thousand Scots families" living in Poland.
