On 14 November 1618 James Henderson became a captain in the Scots-Dutch Brigade, assuming the previous command of Captain George Bothwell. After his appointment he commanded 70 men with a salary of £1059. By 13 February 1633 he was serving as sergeant-major, and by 20 July 1634 he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the regiment. He died before 6 July 1638 and the States General commissioned two representatives to attend his funeral since "lost his life in active service of the state," (Ferguson, 449). Command of his company fell to Captain William Riddell.

It is possible that this is the same Sir James Henderson that was the brother of Sir Robert and Sir Francis Henderson [SSNE 4975, 8024], both colonels of James' regiment and sons of James Henderson of Fordell. However, there were many James Hendersons in Dutch service at this time and though Ferguson cites the three brothers as being veterans of the "Danish, Swedish, and French wars," this can only be substantiated under further research. For example, papers remain in the National Archives of Scotland, GD172 Fordell muniments which relate to a Capt. James Henrysone, though these must be checked to establish they refer to the same man.
