Lieutenant General Robert Murray of Melgum served as Colonel for a regiment in Dutch service between 1698-1716 having come from the Scots Foot Guards. By 1705 he was also made Major General and sent two letters to the Earl of Mar from The Hague and Mastricht proposing himself as Lt. General in command of a regiment of Guards, an appointment he receivedNAS GD124/15/273; J.
