Hugh Mackay of Scourie was the 3rd son of Colonel Hugh Mackay of Scourie, previously of French (Roral Scots) service. Mackay served abroad between 1660-1673. He gained his appointment in Dutch service on 19 March 1675 and had served as a captain since 1674. His lieutenant colonelcy came on 8 January 1675. He took over the regiment of Henry Graham [SSNE 4967] in 1677. His regiment was sent to England in 1685 in connection with Monmouth's rebellion during which time he was appointed major-General by James VII. In the same year, the Scottish Privy Council appointed him overall commander of three scottish regiments in the Dutch Republic. In 1688 he commanded the British brigade of six regiments sent to England in support of William of Orange. Between 1689-1691 he was in overall command in Scotland. Mackay was defeated by Claverhouse at Killiekrankie, but defeated Cannon, Claverhouse's successor in 1689. He also served in Ireland and later led the attack at Steinkirk where he was slain. King William said of him at his funeral, "there he lies, and an honester man the world cannot produce".
