William Sandilands succeeded Robert Halkett as captain in Erskine's regiment in 1661, taking his commission on 9 August of that year. By 1665 his company stood at 49 men and his monthly pay at £783. In 1668 he was appointed Sergeant-Major of Louis Erskine's regiment in place of John Roper, deceased. He was still listed in service as Sergeant-Major in 1673.
