Captain John Hamilton was one of several officers of that name in the Scots Brigade. David Dobson believes him to have been a Colonel, but in fact there was never a Colonel by that name in the Brigade. He raised a company for the Dutch Republic in 1596 under licence from James VI and received his commission on 15th August that year. In 1607 Hamilton received £1925 pay and had a company of 150 men. By 1613 this had been reduced to 70 men with a wage of £1059. On his death sometime on or before 16th Junuary 1620, his daughter, Margaret [SSNE 8208], petitioned for compensation based on her fathers 40 years of service and was backed in this by the Scottish Privy Council. A second petition was submitted to the States-General on 26th January 1621, but it was rejected.
