Robert Lindsay served as a merchant and resident at Canara since October 1676 and in September 1678 he was called to Batavia to give account of his actions there. He must have impressed, for thereafter Lindsay became 'Commissioner of Marriages and Small Affairs'. He later undertook courier missions for the Batavian Council. On his first mission he carried dispatches as far away as Cochin, and Cananore in India. By August 1680 he again worked along the Malabar Coast where he took over as senior merchant by August 1685 and thereafter seems not to have returned to Java.
