William Thomson is said to be the son of John Thomson, commander of Orebro castle. He served in the Royal Navy before becoming a captain in Swedish service and commanded the royal yacht of Karl XI. Thomson was ennobled in 1676 and died in 1689.

There is a letter in Sweden by one Thomas Thomson (possibly [SSNE 8325]) noting the death of his brother, William in 1689, but that letter is clearly directed to his father, Gavin Thomson. It may be unrelated, but if the same, it might indicate an error by Marryat.

H. Marryat, One Year in Sweden, including a visit to the isle of Gotland (London, 1862) p.489
