Gustav Maclean (known as Macklier in Sweden) was born in 1641, the son of John/Hans Maclean [SSNE 1631] and his first wife Anna Gubbertz. He began his military service as a pikeman in the Prince of Orange's guard in 1660. Thereafter he accompanied the queen of Bohemia to England in 1661. Gustav later served in the French Swiss guards and the Furst of Soisson's life company. On 1 October 1663 he was declared 'Grand Musketeer' and in 1665 he fought in the Turenne campaign in Holland. He left French service in 1667 and returned to Sweden. He became a lieutenant captain in the Älvsborg infantry in 1668 and a captain there the following year. In 1674 he was a major and then lieutenant colonel in his brother, Peter's [SSNE 3027] recruited infantry regiment in 1675. In 1676 Maclean became colonel of the newly enlisted soldiers in Älvsborg area. In 1678 he was also lieutenant colonel for the Västgötadal regiment and on 10 February 1680 he became colonel for the Swedish infantry liferegiment of Prince Karl and the commandant of the fortifications in Gothenburg. Once there, Maclean featured frequently in the correspondence of the governor of the city. His name also appeared on the Gothenburg shipping lists: in 1684 he sent goods to Hamburg and Stralsund; in 1685 to Stralsund; in 1686 twice to Hamburg; in 1688 again to Hamburg and in 1689 he sent goods to London. On 18 February 1694 Maclean married Sara Carlberg, widow of Conrad Braunjohan. That year a Sara Macklier appeared in the Gothenburg shipping lists, sending goods to Amsterdam in 1694. He appeared to be a full and well-respected member of the community in Gothenburg and is noted in the Christina church records as a godparent to various newborns in the community almost every year, and sometimes more often, between 1668 and 1701. He died, childless, of a stomach illness at the age of 54 on 17 July 1701 and was buried in Gothenburg's Christina church on 21 July that year. He was noted as a "well beloved commandant of 20 years standing".
