Sir Gabriel Sylvius undertook diplomatic missions to Brandenburg-Prussia, Braunschweig-Luneberg-Celle and Braunschweig-Luneburg-Calenberg in 1669. HE was engaged in negotiations with the Dutch in 1676 in London and later served as an envoy in Denmark-Norway and northern Germany c.1680-1688, accompanied by his secretary Thomas Fotherby. During this mission he travelled to Hesse-Kassel in 1680 and Braunschweig-Luneburg-Wolfenbuttel in 1681. Dispatches from him dated June 1685 to June 1686 from Denmark to Lord Middleton still survive. He thereafter became British Resident in Hamburg in 1686.
