Charles Ramsay was born in Elbing, the son of a Scottish migrant of the same name from Dundee. He studied in Vilnius, Thorn and Danzig before he set off for Scotland in 1633 where he spent a year (also passing some time in England). He enrolled at the university of Cracow in 1636 and between 1638-1644 spent time in England, France, Italy and Austria where he visited numerous centres of learning. He established himself back in Elbing in 1648 where he received citizenship and undertook various roles in the political life of the town. The following year a Charles Ramsay listed as 'Dantiscanus, puer peracto despotionis ritu matriculae insertus numerauit' in the matriculation records for Konigsberg which also might be this man. In any case he devoted a lot of his time to the study of the history of Elbing and published numerous works on the subject. He was made a town councillor in 1661

This source contains inconsistancies. It has Charles Senior die in 1659, but made councillor in 1661. It is most probably that there were three Charles Ramsay's in Elbing, not two.
