Captain Thomas Lindsay was an army captain from Leith who served in Britain, Holland and Venice. In 1632 he came to Moscow with a recommendation to the Tsar and Patriarch Filaret from King Charles I, but was not accepted with the explanation that all officers' posts in regiments of "foreign order" were filled. However, on 9 July 1635 he was granted permission to raise 200 men in Scotland for overseas service.
