Text source
In 1613 Thomas Garne surrendered to Russians with other Scots of the Polish garrison at Belaya. In 1628 he served with the "Great regiment" in Tula, then evidently took part in the Smolensk war and was promoted to colonel. He was "in stature taller and greater in his compass of body than any within six kingdomes about him" and was offered to be King of Bucharia, but refused, having "no stomack to be circumcised".D.
