Robert Weir served as a lieutenant with James Spens' regiment in 1624. He later became a lieutenant in Melker Wurmbrandt's regiment in Riga in 1625. It was possibly this man Alexander Leslie mentioned as 'Captaine Weir' a courier of information to Marquis Hamilton in August 1631. Whether so or not, he transferred again, this time as a captain to Thomas Karr's recruited infantry regiment in 1633, the same year that he became a major. Monro notes him as a lieutenant colonel in 1632 (if it is the same man) and that he was later killed in Saxony.
