SINCLAIR, JOHAN [SSNE 3319]

Johan Sinclair was the son of Ludvig Sinclair [SSNE 3516] and Christina, daughter of Lord Stanhouse and was born in Stade (in Swedish Bremen). In 1695, the young Sinclair volunteered into During's Holstein regiment in the Dutch Republic. He became an ensign in 1700, before volunteering for the Swedish army in 1703. By 21 March 1705, Sinclair held the rank of captain. He was captured in 1709 by the Saxon army, and released in 1711 on his word not to fight them again. He moved to Paris, and later joined the Swedish court at Lund. On 18 February 1717, Sinclair became a major in the Zweibrukenska Infantry. He left service in October 1724 with the rank of Colonel. He joined the Hanovarians with this rank and died in 1729 in Niederbronn. It is likely he had a brother called Ludwig von Sinclair [SSNE 6094]
