Hugh Montgomery became an ensign with James Seaton's recruited regiment in 1630-1. In 1631 he transferred to George Cunningham's regiment. The following year he served as a lieutenant in Robert Cunningham's recruited regiment where he remained for many years. He probably served at the Battle of Wittstock in 1636. In 1639 he became a lieutenant in Robert Monroe's recruited infantry regiment before transferring to Alexander Cunningham's recruited regiment. This move meant that for sure he missed the First Bishops War, but he may have returned for the second as he is not in the 1640 muster.

This is probably the man who served in the Earl of Eglinton's Horse in the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant in 1644. The source: A list of the Several Regiments and Chief Officers of the Scottish Army quartered neer Newcastle (London 1644) places this man as the lieutenant colonel of Eglinton's; Ed. Furgol is probably more correct that this rank was filled by Robert Montgomert. See Furgol, A Regimental History of the Covenanting Armies, 1639-1641 (Edinburgh, 1990), 134, 230.
