Ludowick Lindsay (later 16th Earl of Crawford) served as a lieutenant in Alexander Hamilton's regiment in Swedish service in 1629-30. He later became lieutenant in John Hamilton's regiment in 1630. and a captain in Pierre du Verges dragoon squadron in 1631-2. Some peerages and sites that draw on them claim he was a colonel in Swedish service, but there is no evidence to support this yet uncovered in the Swedish archives. He later changed sides and raised a regiment for Spain. During the British Civil Wars, Lindsay fought for the Royalists under Patrick Ruthven at Edgehill and commanded a cavalry unit at Roundway Down. He went on to serve with Montrose in Scotland and was one of the 'treacherous Scots' captured by Alexander Leslie at Newcastle in 1644. later released and promoted to General of Horse, he fled into exile in 1646, rejoined the Spanish and converted to Roman Catholicism.
