The earliest reference to John Kinnemond in Swedish military records is to one lieutenant Hans Jacob Kinnemond in Samuel Cockburn's [SSNE 4219] Scottish regiment in 1613. This is probably, though not certainly, the same man who served as a lieutenant in 1620 where he served variously in the regiments of John [SSNE 2595] and Alexander Hamilton [SSNE 380]. This regiment was taken over by Ludovick Leslie [SSNE 396] and served at the battle of Lutzen. He was thereafter promoted to captain and eventually served as lieutenant colonel and commander for colonel William Gunn's [SSNE 159] recruited infantry squadron by 1636 with whom he fought at Wittstock.
