Johan Kinnaird appears to have served as an artillery specialist in Sweden from 1671 until 1704. He was in Stockholm in 1696, Gothenburg in 1697 and Wolmar and Dorpat in 1701. Kinnaird was killed during the siege of Narva in 1704 when a force of some 5000 Swedes sought to defend the town from an onslaught of 45,000 Russians led by Peter the Great.

Bengt Nilsson generously provided the following references and sources which allowed for the updating of the above entry: Hansen, H. J., Geschichte der Stadt Narva (1858), p.212. Mr Nilsson also identified more than 30 letters from Kinnaird to Major General W. A. Schlippenbach in the Schlippenbach collection, Riksarkivet (Stockholm). There are also occasional letters in Fond 7349, op. 1, vol. 345  -  Latvijas Valsts Vestures Arhivs, Riga (sent rom Kinnaird in Dorpat to Governor General Frölich in Riga). In one of them Kinnaird calls himself “a nobleman”. He labels Frölich his “patron” and seems to suggest that he had served under Frölich for a long time.
