William Hamilton served a reformed lieutenant with William Baillie until 1633. In 1635 became a lieutenant with David Drummond's recruited regiment.

It was probably this man who served as major to the Lithgow and Tweedale Foot in the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant in 1644.
