Herbert Gladstone was a descendant of Thomas Gladstone of Dumfries, governor of Craig in Scotland. He was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1600, but immigrated to Sweden around 1630. He served first as a lieutenant in James Seaton's [SSNE 3476] recruited regiment and later in George Cunningham's [SSNE 2118] and George Crafoord's [SSNE 2086] regiments. He is said to have recruited in Scotland in 1637 which would have meant that he returned to Scotland from Sweden for a time. The Swedish treasury records note that on 28 February 1640 it was decided that Colonel "Glatsteen" should receive the repayment of his loan and also to be awarded the priest of Parsbodha's farms as a reward. In 1641 Gladstone became lieutenant colonel with Osterbotten's regiment and by 1647 he became colonel and chief of the Osterbotten regiment. Gladstone became ennobled in Sweden as Gladsten. In a letter dated 28 June 1639 from Hamburg, a Lt. Colonel He. Gledstein (probably him) signed a testmonial that arms bought by Sir Thomas Roe were serviceable and fit for service by Charles I. He was married three times, first to a woman in Ireland with whom he had three daughters who remained in Ireland who were alive in 1652. His second marriage was to Christina Stuart [SSNE 6251], daughter of Anders Stuart [SSNE 1646], Governor-General of Livonia, while he served in Germany in 1640, and lastly to Ingeborg Jacobskold. He had one son, Johan Anders (son of Christina Stuart) [SSNE 4783] who became a Major in 1675. He died in July 1649 in Germany.
