Laurentz Douglies was born in 1640. He first appears in Swedish military service as a constable in an apprenticeship at the artillery in in 1655. By 1668 he had become a "styckjunkare". In 1670 Douglies became an ensign, and by 1673 he was a lieutenant captain. The following year he became the regimental quartermaster and was promoted again in 1676 to captain. He remained at this rank until 1681 when he became a major in Wismar, and by 1695 he was lieutenant colonel in Riga. In 1699 he is appeared on the merit list. The last letter he is so far known to have written was dated 8 August 1702 from Riga. Douglies married Christina Gyllengranat.
