Johan Douglies was born in 1605 in Roe (possibly Shetland?), Scotland. In 1634 he became 'gefreiter' or corporal with colonel Alexander von Essen's German regiment in Swedish service. In 1635 he was 'byssemäster' for the artillery. In 1636 he was 'petardor' and eventually in 1645 he was made lieutenant captain. He is probably the same as the Johan Douglies who received instructions from the military college in Stockholm regarding the sending of saltpeter from Gotland to Stockholm in 1653 (some sources say 1652). The following year he was appointed captain of artillery. Douglas was ennobled in 1669, and his sons were introduced in 1672. Apparently he was appointed lieutenant colonel before he died. He is listed as dead by 11 September 1670 in Kalmar.
