James, earl of Carlisle, is noted as an extraordinary envoy to Sweden twice, first in 1664 and then in 1669. He was certainly in Stockholm on 1 October 1664 as he wrote to the Swedish king, Karl XI, commending about 16 different cases to the king. These cases involved people from both the Scottish and English communities in Sweden. He arrived for his second visit on 10 April 1669 bearing "riddarebandet", an order, which he presented to the Swedish king on 19 April. Another source notes that Carlisle arrived in Stockholm on 7 July that year and was lodged at Count Carl Wrangel's home. Carlisle had an audience with the king on 10 July and ate 7 meals with him. The king received his English knighthood on 29 July. Amongst his retinue was one Guy Miege(?). On 7 September Carlisle came to Rosersberg with Colonel Malcolm Hamilton [SSNE 2605] and Captain Peter Maclean [SSNE 3027]. He left Sweden on 23 September that year. Apparently his embassy was limited by the fact that he had a very poor translator with him.
