James Ferguson was noted as a Scotsman in Swedish military records, who first joined up age 22. He served first as a reformed sergeant and muster-writer in the Estonian infantry regiment until 1692. He thereafter became an NCO in the Riga government regiment in 1694. In 1697 he was ennobled and appears on the merit list. In 1700 he became an ensign with Erik Dahlberg's recruited infantry regiment and the following year he was promoted to lieutenant.
